​Office Administration jobs help to support the smooth and efficient running of offices, carry out a wide range of clerical and administrative tasks, such as updating, recording and storing information, photocopying, filing, word processing, answering the telephone and dealing with the post.

Office Administrator Jobs involve work on computers to type or word process documents, such as letters and reports. Office administrators or administrative assistants as they are otherwise known may receive the information to be typed in several ways. You’ll have a grasp of copy typing - working from a rough draft to be corrected by the typist, or a corrected copy that must be accurately transposed.

Although office-based admin may be varied, much of it is carried out in front of a computer screen and jobs in office administration may spend long periods of time sitting. As back-office support, maintaining high standards in your personal appearance is key, particularly if the job involves receiving visitors, and smart dress may be required.

Office Administrators fulfil a range of other administrative functions, which may include:

  • Audio typing - listening to a voice recording through headphones and typing what is being said.

  • Typing letters, memos, agendas and meeting minutes, presentations and reports.

  • Coordinate the maintenance of office equipment and order stationery supplies.

  • Covering reception dealing with visitors and answering telephone calls.

  • Updating databases, maintaining filing systems, providing services for teams and managers, providing hospitality for guests and sending and managing emails.

  • Interaction with clients and other people outside of the company.

Office Administrator required skills:

An office administrator may need shorthand typing experience typing up shorthand notes made from dictation.

Expected salary of an Office Administrator:

Starting salaries for office administrator jobs are around £17,000 to £23,000 a year.

An office administrator may work around 35-39 hours a week, Monday to Friday. Larger companies may offer flexitime schemes for office administrators. Some international companies may require 24-hour office administrators to cover and operate a shift scheme for employees and work may be on part time and temporary contracts.
