CAD draughtsman jobs (computer-aided design) play an important part in designing everything from buildings and road systems to washing machines and wallpapers.

CAD draughtsmen are design engineers, will more than likely have previous experience within the mechanical engineering environment and draughtsman jobs combine relevant draughting experience to collaborate with key stakeholders such as architectural technicians, and be familiar with manufacturing limits and geometrical tolerancing.

CAD draughtsmen use latest computer aided design technology to create on-screen drawings needed in a whole range of sectors, including architecture, building services, construction, civil engineering, structural engineering and manufacturing. CAD designs can often be turned into the engineering or architectural drawings that are used for eventual construction.

CAD draughtsman usually work in a team with others, where each person works on part of the project. A junior draughtsperson works on technical drawings for components or small sections of a product or project. Senior draughts people however may have responsibility for major sections or the overall design and might contribute to decisions about the project.

To perform CAD Draughtsman Jobs, you'll need:

  • to be very skilled on computers and with CAD packages

  • to have a good imagination

  • to understand construction or production methods and processes

  • an interest in designing on computers and finding solutions to design problems

  • to be very skilled on computers and with CAD packages

  • a logical mind to solve problems

  • good communication skills to explain your designs to others

All manufacturing and construction companies need designs and technical drawings to work from may also work for engineering design consultancies or on a self-employed contract basis. There are engineering and design companies in almost every part of the country.

Adults with a background in engineering or design may be able to move into CAD draughting, perhaps studying part time for a relevant qualification.

As at February, 2020, a typical salary of a CAD draughtsman is £32,000.
