What Does a Pipefitter Do?

A Pipefitter specialises in assembling, installing, and maintaining piping systems that transport liquids, gases, and steam within buildings and industrial plants. Working from detailed plans and blueprints, Pipefitters ensure systems are safe, efficient, and built to exact specifications. Typical Pipefitter duties include:

  • Installing and securing various pipe fittings in residential, commercial, or industrial environments.

  • Connecting pipes using methods such as welding, threading, or cementing joints.

  • Preparing and interpreting technical drawings, blueprints, and full-scale installation plans.

  • Inspecting existing pipe systems to identify issues and perform maintenance or repairs.

  • Testing pipe networks for safety, pressure, and functionality.

  • Managing and organising workloads to complete projects efficiently and on schedule.

Pipefitters often work closely with Plumbers, Welders, and Engineers, ensuring that all systems meet health, safety, and performance standards.

Skills and Attributes for Pipefitter Jobs

Pipefitting requires a combination of technical knowledge, precision, and problem-solving ability. It’s a hands-on, detail-oriented role where accuracy is critical to ensuring system safety and reliability.

Key skills and attributes include:

  • Strong understanding of pipe systems, materials, and installation methods.

  • Competence in reading and interpreting technical drawings and blueprints.

  • Proficiency in using power tools and welding equipment.

  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to high safety standards.

  • Physical strength and stamina for lifting and positioning heavy materials.

  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.

Experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software can also be an advantage for planning and visualising complex piping layouts.

Qualifications and Experience for Pipefitter Roles

To secure a Pipefitter job, candidates are typically required to complete an apprenticeship in Pipefitting or Mechanical Engineering, gaining hands-on experience alongside classroom-based learning.

Many employers also look for:

  • NVQ/SVQ Level 3 in Pipefitting, Engineering, or a related field.

  • CSCS or equivalent site safety certifications.

  • Experience in welding, fabrication, or mechanical maintenance.

A sound understanding of health and safety procedures and manual handling regulations is essential. Additional certifications such as Confined Spaces or Pressure Testing may also enhance employability.

With experience, Pipefitters can progress into Supervisory, Project Management, or Inspection roles, or specialise in areas such as Industrial Pipefitting or Offshore Engineering.
