What Does a Site Engineer Do?

A Site Engineer is responsible for overseeing the technical, organisational, and supervisory aspects of construction projects. You’ll act as the main technical adviser on-site, ensuring that all work is carried out accurately, safely, and in line with the project’s design specifications.


Working closely with architects, planners, and subcontractors, you’ll play a hands-on role in setting out and marking construction sites, as well as managing resources and coordinating on-site teams to meet deadlines and maintain high-quality standards. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Acting as the main technical adviser on-site for subcontractors, craftspeople, and operatives.

  • Setting out, levelling, and surveying the site to ensure accuracy in construction.

  • Reviewing and checking plans, drawings, and quantities for technical accuracy.

  • Ensuring all materials used and work performed comply with project specifications.

  • Managing the selection, requisition, and procurement of materials and equipment.

  • Making cost-effective proposals and solutions for project delivery.

  • Interpreting and managing contract design documents from architects or clients.

  • Liaising with consultants, subcontractors, supervisors, planners, and quantity surveyors.

  • Ensuring compliance with local authority regulations and building by-laws.

  • Communicating with clients and stakeholders, attending progress meetings, and providing regular updates.

  • Managing day-to-day site activities, including supervising staff and subcontractors.

  • Overseeing health, safety, and quality control across the project.

  • Preparing reports and documentation as required.

  • Identifying and resolving technical issues and unexpected challenges as they arise.

This role requires excellent technical ability, clear communication, and strong problem-solving skills to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to a high standard.
