Whether you’re newly qualified or an experienced Paralegal ready to take on more responsibility, we can help you find the ideal opportunity to match your expertise and ambitions.

What Does a Paralegal Do?

Paralegals are vital members of the legal profession, providing essential support to solicitors, partners, and clients. They assist with case preparation, legal research, and document management, ensuring that every detail is handled with accuracy and professionalism.

Depending on the size and specialism of the firm, Paralegals may work in a specific area of law such as conveyancing, litigation, family law, employment law, or criminal defence. Their contribution allows legal professionals to focus on strategy and representation while ensuring all administrative and procedural aspects are completed efficiently. Typical responsibilities of a Paralegal include:

  • Conducting legal research and preparing case summaries.

  • Drafting contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.

  • Validating and investigating key information for lawyers.

  • Managing case files and maintaining accurate legal records.

  • Liaising with clients, witnesses, law enforcement, and external agencies.

  • Coordinating court dates, hearings, and client meetings.

  • Preparing bundles and supporting solicitors in court or client negotiations.

  • Ensuring confidentiality and compliance with legal and data protection standards.

The role of a Paralegal demands a combination of accuracy, professionalism, and initiative, making it an excellent fit for those who enjoy problem-solving, research, and structured work.

Skills and Qualities for Paralegal Jobs

Paralegals are expected to operate with a high level of competence and integrity. Given the sensitive and often confidential nature of legal work, attention to detail and discretion are essential.

Key skills and attributes of a successful Paralegal include:

  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.

  • Strong legal research and analytical skills.

  • Exceptional organisational and time management abilities.

  • Proficiency in legal software and document management systems.

  • The ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.

  • Sound knowledge of legal terminology and processes.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Integrity and confidentiality when handling sensitive cases.

Most Paralegals work standard office hours (Monday to Friday), though additional hours may be required in demanding areas such as criminal law or corporate litigation.

How to Become a Paralegal

There are several routes into Paralegal jobs, depending on your education, experience, and career goals. While some employers may offer entry-level opportunities with on-the-job training, others prefer candidates with formal qualifications in law or legal practice.

Common qualification pathways include:

  • HND or Diploma in Legal Services or Paralegal Studies.

  • Law degree (LLB) or relevant legal certification.

  • Scottish Paralegal Association (SPA) or Law Society of Scotland accredited qualifications.

  • SOLAS courses for legal cashroom and administrative expertise.

Some law firms provide internal training or support for professional development, allowing you to progress into more senior Paralegal or Legal Executive positions.

With experience, Paralegals may specialise further, for example, becoming a Senior Conveyancing Paralegal, Corporate Legal Assistant, or moving into Practice Management or Compliance roles.
