What Does a Quality Engineer Do?

A Quality Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining systems that ensure products and services consistently meet or exceed customer expectations. Working closely with teams across production, design, and supply chain, Quality Engineers focus on improving processes, preventing defects, and driving continuous improvement.

You’ll be involved in every stage of the production cycle, from design and development to final inspection, ensuring that quality standards and compliance requirements are met at every step. Typical responsibilities include:

• Developing and maintaining quality management systems (QMS) to ensure product reliability and compliance

• Ensuring project deliverables are achieved efficiently and to specification

• Managing and improving day-to-day quality processes across projects

• Performing root cause analysis and implementing corrective or preventive actions

• Validating project processes to ensure compliance with internal and external standards

• Managing product acceptance from suppliers and subcontractors

• Developing and implementing audit programmes to ensure process integrity

• Measuring and reporting on quality metrics, identifying issues early to minimise impact

• Liaising directly with customers and stakeholders to ensure satisfaction and ongoing improvement

• Supporting supplier development and challenging partner activities where appropriate

• Promoting a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence throughout the organisation

Skills, Experience & Education

To succeed in a Quality Engineer job, you’ll need a blend of technical knowledge, analytical ability, and interpersonal skills. You’ll work closely with engineering and production teams, so strong communication and teamwork are just as important as technical expertise.

Key skills include

• Strong knowledge of ISO 9001, AS9100, or other quality management systems

• Experience with Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies

• Proficiency in statistical analysis tools and data interpretation

• Excellent problem-solving and root cause analysis skills

• Attention to detail and commitment to high standards

• Strong interpersonal and influencing skills, particularly when working cross-functionally

• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively

• A proactive approach to identifying and resolving quality issues

Familiarity with tools such as FMEA, PPAP, and SPC is often highly desirable, particularly in regulated industries.

Education and Experience

To pursue a Quality Engineer career, most employers require a degree in engineering, manufacturing, or a related technical discipline. Some roles may accept HND/HNC qualifications alongside strong practical experience in quality assurance or production engineering.

Additional qualifications such as Lean Six Sigma Green or Black Belt certification, or membership with a professional body such as the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI), can also enhance your career prospects.
