Acting as the backbone of an architectural team, you’ll gain invaluable experience in design, project coordination, and client interaction. Typical responsibilities include:
Assisting Architects in developing construction plans and design concepts

Conducting research on materials, building codes, and sustainability standards
Maintaining and organising architectural drawings, plans, and client specifications
Collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders to meet project deadlines
Ensuring all architectural work complies with UK building regulations and design standards
Architectural Assistants often work on multiple projects simultaneously, gaining exposure to both creative and technical aspects of architecture.
Education and Training
To secure an Architectural Assistant job in the UK, you’ll typically need a degree accredited by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) or the Architects Registration Board (ARB).
In Scotland, there are six universities and colleges offering accredited architecture degrees that combine academic study with practical work placements, giving students a strong foundation in design, planning, and project management.
Many Architectural Assistants work full-time while completing part-time postgraduate studies, progressing toward RIBA Part 2 and Part 3 qualifications to eventually become a fully registered Architect. Common qualifications include: RIBA Part 1 Architecture degree, Master’s in Architecture (Part 2), Professional Practice and Management qualification (Part 3).
