How to Become a Tax Assistant

Education

While a high school diploma (GCSEs or A-Levels) is the minimum requirement, many employers prefer candidates with formal education in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related fields.


Qualifications

Although not always mandatory, the following qualifications can significantly enhance your career prospects: AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) – Levels 2 or 3 in Accounting or Bookkeeping, ATT (Association of Taxation Technicians) qualification for those specialising in tax, HMRC or CIPP tax training courses and proficiency in accounting software such as Sage, Xero, or QuickBooks. 


Experience 

Previous experience in bookkeeping, payroll, or administrative finance roles is highly beneficial. It helps develop essential skills in record-keeping, compliance, and customer service — all of which are valuable in a tax environment.
