How to Calm Second Interview Nerves

Congratulations! You’ve made it to the second stage of the interview process. While this is a great opportunity to further showcase your skills and qualifications, it’s natural to feel nervous or anxious before the big day. Second-round interview nerves are common, as this is usually the final interview stage, and people often put a lot of pressure on themselves, but with the right strategies you can put your nerves to one side and present yourself confidently. Our consultants at Stafffinders have put together their top tips for nailing your second interview.

Prepare, Prepare, Prepare

One of the easiest ways to calm your nerves is to be well-prepared. Review the job description and company information to make sure you understand the role and the company fully. Research the company culture and recent news to demonstrate your interest and knowledge during the interview. Ask your consultant for feedback and insights from the first interview as they will have valuable insight into what the interviewer is thinking. Practice your responses to common interview questions and prepare examples that showcase your skills and experiences.

Stay organised, and give yourself plenty of time on the day

Being organised is a good way to keep your nerves at bay. Whether you have an in-person or virtual interview, it is key that you are prepared and try to avoid any last-minute complications. For face-to-face interviews, arrive at your destination with extra time to spare but don’t go into the building until 5 minutes before. For a virtual interview, test your technology a couple of hours before to make sure it’s all working.

Have the same energy and enthusiasm as your first interview

Your first interview is usually to gauge whether you have the experience and capabilities to do the job, whilst the second interview is more about your personality, work ethic and finding out whether you are a good fit for the role. To calm your nerves, try replacing your anxiety with enthusiasm and energy. As upbeat positive responses will show the interviewer you’re still interested in the role. A good tip is to remind yourself why you want this role and how your skills are a good fit.

Remember this is a two-way process

Interviews are also an opportunity for you to figure out if the role and company are really the right ones for you. Use this as an opportunity to get all your questions answered, find out if you will fit in with the company culture, and whether the work will be rewarding and align with your goals.

Remember that you are an impressive candidate

You didn’t get asked back for a second stage interview by chance. The interviewer liked you, your experience, and thinks you could be suitable for the job. However, it is easy to lose sight of what makes you great. Spend some time considering your strengths and experiences as it will not only boost your confidence, but it will also help you prepare and settle your nerves.

Second interviews aren’t designed to catch you out; they are a way for a potential future employer to get to know you better and ultimately, help you decide if the role is right for you. Before your second stage interview, you should chat through your thoughts and questions with your consultant, as they have already built a relationship with the interviewer and will be able to offer unique insights and advice.
