Temp Day 1 - What to Expect

Starting your first temporary shift can be exciting, and a little nerve-wracking. Whether you’re working in hospitality, a warehouse, cleaning, or another hands-on role, here’s what you can expect and how to make the best first impression.

Arrive Early and Prepared

Plan your route in advance and aim to arrive 10–15 minutes early. It shows professionalism and gives you time to settle in before starting. Bring any documents or equipment you’ve been asked to provide, such as ID, safety gear, or uniform.

Meet your Supervisor

On arrival, you’ll usually check in with a supervisor or site manager. They’ll explain your duties, show you around, and cover any health and safety procedures. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, it’s better to clarify than guess.

Get Briefed in Your Tasks

Every shift can be different. You’ll receive clear instructions on what’s expected, whether that’s setting up tables, preparing stock, cleaning specific areas, or assisting a team. Listen carefully and take notes if needed.

Follow Heath & Safety Guidelines

Safety comes first, especially in warehouse and cleaning environments. Wear the correct PPE (personal protective equipment), follow instructions, and report any hazards straight away.

Work as Part of the Team

Temporary roles often involve working alongside permanent staff. Be polite, proactive, and willing to help out, teamwork makes a great impression and can lead to more shifts in the future.

End the Shift Professionally

At the end of your shift, check out with your supervisor, confirm your hours, and thank them for the opportunity. A positive attitude goes a long way toward being requested again.
