Quality Managers are responsible for ensuring a consistent, high quality of output is present across an organisation’s product or service offerings. Quality Managers must establish and implement quality control processes that will safeguard the quality of final output. Quality Managers will also create an effective work environment within the project team to ensure teamwork, staff development and motivation.
The job of a quality manager will comprise of the following tasks:
- Implement strict protocol throughout the value chain regarding quality assurance, making sure guidelines are clearly understood.
- Subject external suppliers to strict analysis to make sure they're fitting with the organisation’s quality standard
- Monitor, analyse and evaluate current business performance and construct strategies for future improvement
- Liaise closely with current organisation employees to establish best practice
In order to become a successful quality manager, candidates must have the ability to think analytically and be able to solve problems using data. Quality managers must also excellent communication and interpersonal skills to safeguard understanding of new quality assurance procedures. While not essential, a relevant business related HND or Degree qualification would be beneficial for any aspiring quality manager.
Salary and Working Conditions
Starting salaries for junior quality managers will range between £23,000-£28,000. Quality managers with more experience can earn anywhere between £32,000-£50,000 per year, depending on the location of work and employer. The working conditions will depend upon the sector, with some sectors being office based and others being warehouses, for example. However, in the main quality managers should expect to start early and finish late.
