Cost Engineering in Scotland

A cost engineer is an engineer who focuses on ensuring that projects are delivered on time and adhere to a budget. cost engineer jobs play a key role in cost management, providing the cost input to the development and execution of major international green-field projects, whilst ensuring that all health and safety requirements are met.

A successful cost engineer has skills, experience and qualifications in their field of engineering whether it be mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, civil engineering or other. They will also have developed strong cost management and project management skills to enable them to successfully manage the finances of a project, review contractor performance and conduct profitability analyses.

Some employers may require that applicants have an additional voluntary professional certification in cost engineering before hiring them.

What are the typical duties of a Cost Engineer?

  • Preparing forecasts based on spend, progress, changes, trends and risks
  • Preparing and setting up a complete set of reporting documents to provide visibility of progress and cost
  • Contributing to the establishment of a world-class safety mindset for the project

An entry level cost engineer will have at least a BSc, HTS or HBO technical qualification, or the equivalent knowledge level based on experience.  The entrant may have quality, documentation or project management experience.

The main job opportunities occur in mechanical engineering, motor vehicle, aerospace, oil and gas and shipbuilding industries.
