Software Engineer Jobs

Software Engineer Jobs are sometimes referred to as computer programmers, software designers, application designers, application programmers, coders, development programmers or software programmers.

The software engineering industry is a rapidly expanding global marketplace. Developers and engineers are employed across all industry sectors, from finance and retail to engineering and public sector organisations.

Having responsibility for creating functioning applications is one of the most important jobs in IT. Without them, all those millions of PCs and laptops and smartphones and tablets would be useless! Software engineer jobs figure out a program's objectives, design the way it works and write the code that creates it.

Responsibilities of software engineers

To design a suitable system, software developer jobs and software engineer jobs will:

  • Software engineers work closely with analysts, designers and commercial staff
  • Translate the client requirements into detailed technical specifications
  • Either write the programming code from scratch, or adapt existing applications
  • Test the software systems and identify any software bugs or glitches
  • Ensure that the work is fully documented

Skills and qualifications

A degree in software engineeing or a related subject such as computer science is usually required, while knowledge of mathematics and computer hardware is highly useful.

Written and verbal communication skills are also key because software is usually produced by a team of engineers.

Employers look not just for knowledge of programming languages but also for a real understanding of how code works, not least for fixing problems that arise.

It is possible for a software engineer to specialise in a technical hands-on role, or move into team management. Experienced software engineers can also use their business experience and knowledge to find work as IT consultants or to move into lecturing, training, or become self-employed and work as contractors.

Software Engineers - expected salary

Software engineer jobs salaries may range from £18,000 to over £50,000 and is very much dependant upon the experience and skills of the individual.
