Skilled Welder Jobs

A role in welding is an active position which involves manual labour and great concentration.  This is very skilled work, often with more than one method of welding involved in each job, including Arc, MIG, TIG and Stick Welding. There and several serious health and safety risks, therefore full and thorough training is required.

The journey to become a fully-trained welder may require on-the-job training to undertake a full apprenticeship and gain qualifications through this. An alternative way to become a qualified welder is to gain qualifications independently and enter the industry this way.

Typically, a trainee welder will earn the minimum wage for apprentices in the UK (£3.70 per hour), but this will vary from business to busness, with some offering up to £18,000 per year. Once qualified, a typical welder salary is up to £30,000. This can increase with additional qualifications or foreman positions.

A career in welding is a skilled job choice

A welder's working hours are 37 to 39 hours per week, Monday to Friday. However, overtime is common and most work much longer hours. You may be working in factories or workshops, or in a wide range of locations on site - some may work outdoors.

A job in welding requires good hand-to-eye coordination, good concentration, the ability to work unsupervised and the ability to work in a team. Adeherence to safety precautions also must always be demonstrated and you must be able to spot errors quickly and correct them immediately.

Welders can work in civil engineering, engineering construction, agricultural engineering, shipbuilding, vehicle manufacture and repair.
