Medical Secretary Jobs

Medical Secretaries support GPs, hospital consultants and other senior staff in the healthcare sector. There are also opportunities available in private medical practices, medical research or even complimentary medicine.

Medical secretary jobs are varied roles incorporating dealing with patients and visitors, as well as most other secretarial and admin duties within the healthcare centre.

What does a medical secretary do? 

Within healthcare facilities, medical secretaries will be expected to maintain filing systems and word process documents often from dictated tapes. Answering the telephones and dealing with queries as required will also be a regular part of the role.

Medical secretaries may spend some time at reception assisting with patients or taking files to other departments or other healthcare centres.

Candidates must be an extremely competent administrator as well as possessing an ability to organise daily tasks and often the tasks of others efficiently, while maintaining a high level of service within the healthcare facility.

Effective communication is vital as is an interest in healthcare and healthcare issues. As medical secretary jobs are often dealing with patients files and medical information, attention to detail is also an important skill.
