Construction Planner Jobs

Construction Planner professionals play an integral part of construction management and are responsible for the creation of a plan in order to successfully complete a specific construction project. Exceptional organisation and leadership skills are essential to be a successful Construction Planner as this career is mainly focused on the planning and execution of multiple projects. As a Planner, you are required to supervise working schedules, logistics, workers and also the company budgets to ensure these all contribute to the organisation's key objectives. You will also work very closely and liaise with certain tradesmen, architects and surveyors.

What is involved in a Construction Planner role?

  • Plan, develop and communicate a construction project plan to meet client specifications
  • Define the work required for each task and delegate actions amongst the team
  • Identify an effective schedule and sequence for the work to be carried out in the appropriate order
  • Source and allocate specific resources and materials for each project
  • Execute and monitor a solid plan with the assigned team to identify progress

Construction Planner qualification and skill requirements

You may be pleased to know that there are a number of different routes to become a certified Construction Planner, meaning you have the choice of a few options to suit your needs. The most popular routes are the completion of a university or college course whether that’s in Construction Management, Project Management or a similar degree. You also have the option to carry out an apprenticeship which gives you the chance to secure continuous on the job training. Construction companies also value candidates who have previously had work experience within the construction industry and this could be a beneficial stepping stone to get your foot in the door.

In order to work on a construction site, you must also obtain a Construction Skills Certification Scheme card. Proficient use of a computer and basic knowledge of software packages are preferred, as well as core business management skills. Successful Construction Planners have the ability to work well in a team, possess analytical thinking skills and have excellent verbal communication skills.
