An Account Manager's main job is to manage and develop their organisations relationships with specific customer and clients. Jobs in the Account Management function can be fast moving and you will have to combine strong sales skills, as well as excellent customer service abilities, to provide the best possible experience for their customers. Within different organisations, Account Management Job requirements may look slightly different, fundamentally they all involve acting as first point of customer contact, developing excellent working relationships and managing client expectations. Often, account managers will be allocated a client portfolio and it will be your job to nurture and grow the account. A mantra that many successful account managers subscribe to would be to under promise and over deliver.


The requirements of an Account manager will consist of the following:

  • Plan and manage business portfolio and territories according to an agreed market development strategy

  • Manage product and service mix to ensure business offerings are aligned with the demands and expectation of the targeted customer sector

  • Attract new, and develop current, customers through the implementation of marketing and advertising techniques Increase overall customer satisfaction and strengthen customer/business relationships


In order to become a successful account manager, candidates must possess exceptional communication skills as they will be dealing with both clients and colleagues and must be able to relay information between both parties. Candidates must also be sociable individuals, who are able to effectively nurture new client relationships with a wide variety of personalities.


Lastly, account managers must be efficient at managing multiple projects simultaneously. Working environment and salary Account managers are mainly office-based positions, with some time being spent in meetings and some time spent visiting clients. Subsequently, account managers will work standard, 9-5:30pm shifts, with some extra hours required around deadline dates.
