The core function of a Receptionist’s role is to greet, direct and assist visitors, members of the public or potential and existing customers and clients and direct deliveries. Receptionist Jobs involve welcoming customers or other types of visitors. Sitting or standing behind a desk or counter, they greet people as they arrive, and deal with visitors' enquiries. Experience required for Receptionist jobs: They will also take phone calls, sometimes operating a complex switchboard, and may need to pass on messages to members of staff. They should enjoy dealing with people over the phone and help callers, whilst also provide a gatekeeping service to protect senior staff from unnecessary interruptions.
Receptionists also need to keep the reception area tidy and professional. The Receptionist is often the first point of contact, representing the image of the company and setting a good first impression. Other tasks may include clerical work; organising appointments or travel; taking bookings; dealing with petty cash; keeping records and diaries up-to-date and issuing visitor/security passes.
To work as a Receptionist, you need to be friendly, outgoing and confident and have a warm and welcoming personality. Possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal and be of professional appearance. Expected salary of Receptionist jobs: Many Receptionists fall between traditional business hours of 9am-5.30pm Monday to Friday, although this largely depends on the sector and individual organisation. Whilst these are the most common hours, some Receptionists may have a requirement for the weekend and/or evening work. For instance, in the hospitality sector, a Receptionist may work shifts, such as 7am-3pm or 3pm-11pm and in the medical or dental environment, there are often early starts and late finishes. Part-time or job share Receptionists are often available, making reception work very attractive for those who have commitments away from work.
