With the impact of the EU’s GDPR and the UK Data Protection Act (2018), Linkedin's 2020 Emerging Jobs report shows that there are 24x more Data Protection Officer Jobs in the UK than there were in 2015. Demand for cyber security staff has increased significantly with data breaches an ever-present threat for any size organisation, Data Protection Officer Jobs are only going to increase. Data Protection Officers monitor internal compliance, inform and advise on data protection obligations, provide advice regarding Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and serve as the main point of contact for all enquiries into businesses.


Reporting to an appropriate member of the senior management team, the data protection specialist must be independent and adequately resourced and report to the highest management level.


The role of a DPO is to ensure that the handling of personal data complies with data protection rules. Associated technical skills knowledge and experience include:

  • Detailed knowledge of privacy-related legislation and General Data Protection Regulation

  • Maintain databases in line with mandatory GDPR regulation

  • Document data processing policies and individual company privacy policy notice statements

  • Strong communication with senior stakeholders of a non-data background (being able to communicate technical issues in simple business terms)

  • Experience in managing people both in terms of managing delivery teams and providing coaching to individuals

  • Data migration processes and procedures as part of major technology implementations

  • Development of data standards and taxonomies


Unique skills for Data Protection Officer Jobs: Data Privacy, Data Protection Act, GDPR, Data Protection Manager (DPM), Personal Data Protection. Expertise in relation to interpreting and applying information assurance legislation and policies: Data Protection Act, Information Commissioner’s Office policies, Statutory Data Sharing Code of Practice, GDPR. A relevant qualification from an accredited professional body (BCS, CIPP, CIPP/E, CIPM, GDPR-P etc.)
