A Sommelier is a trained and knowledgeable wine professional, typically working in fine dining restaurants, specialising in all aspects of wine service, including wine and food pairing. Their job responsibilities encompass creating and managing wine lists, purchasing wines, and educating staff and customers about different types of wines. Sommeliers use their expertise to enhance the dining experience, recommending wines that complement the dishes' flavours and suit the guests' preferences and budgets. To gain a Sommelier job, one generally starts with gaining experience in the hospitality industry, often working in roles such as server or bartender.

Formal education, such as taking courses from recognised wine institutions like the Court of Master Sommeliers, the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), or the International Sommelier Guild, is essential. These programmes offer various levels of certification, each requiring a combination of theoretical study and practical experience. Aspiring Sommeliers must develop a refined palate, comprehensive wine knowledge, and excellent customer service skills. Gaining practical experience by working under experienced Sommeliers and continually tasting and learning about different wines is crucial. Achieving higher-level certifications, such as Advanced Sommelier or Master Sommelier, involves rigorous examinations and is often pursued by those looking to reach the pinnacle of the profession.
