A Production Chef specialises in preparing large quantities of food for events and institutions. They develop menus tailored for large-scale production, create standardised recipes, and manage the procurement of ingredients in bulk. The responsibilities of a Production Chef job include ensuring food quality and safety, supervising kitchen staff, and coordinating logistics for food delivery and service.

Production Chefs, also known as Catering Chefs, interact with clients to understand their needs and preferences, ensuring that food meets expectations for events. Their role requires a blend of culinary expertise, organisational skills, and management capabilities to deliver high-quality meals efficiently and effectively.

To become a Production Chef, start by obtaining good high school results, particularly in English and Mathematics. Enrol in a culinary school or college to gain formal training through courses like NVQ/SVQ in Professional Cookery or City & Guilds diplomas. Alternatively, consider an apprenticeship in professional cookery, which combines practical experience with academic study. Gain hands-on experience by working in entry-level kitchen positions or internships, where you can learn the basics of the kitchen environment and move towards a Production Chef job. Specialise further by taking advanced courses in catering and large-scale food production and seek employment with catering companies or institutions that provide large-scale food services.
