Medical Secretaries support GPs, hospital consultants and other senior staff in the healthcare sector. There are also opportunities available in private medical practices, medical research or even complimentary medicine. Medical secretaries have varied roles incorporating dealing with patients and visitors, as well as most other secretarial and admin duties within the healthcare centre. 


What does a Medical Secretary do?

Within healthcare facilities, medical assistants will be expected to maintain filing systems and word process documents often from dictated tapes. Medical administrative assistants will also answer the telephones and deal with queries as required. Hospital secretaries may spend some time at reception assisting with patients or taking files to other departments or other healthcare centres. Candidates must be an extremely competent administrator as well as possess an ability to organise daily tasks and often the tasks of others efficiently, while maintaining a high level of service within the healthcare facility. Effective communication skills are vital as is an interest in healthcare and healthcare issues. As the role often involves dealing with patients files and medical information, attention to detail is also an important skill.
