Stafffinders sources skilled talent for Plastering jobs within Glasgow, Edinburgh and throughout the rest of Scotland. Within Plasterer jobs, there are two main types of plastering. The first one is known as solid plastering which involves them applying wet plaster to walls and ceilings to form a flat, smooth surface, ready for decoration. The other type of Plasterer job is fibrous plastering, which is a specialist job involving making or repairing decorative plaster mouldings, such as cornices or ceiling roses. Plasterers tend to work in new and existing buildings undergoing refurbishment. They may also gain some work in the ‘heritage' sector, conserving and restoring historic buildings. Moreover, Plasterers may occasionally work outdoors, applying to render to outside walls. The average salary for a plasterer is £29,000 in the UK.
Duties of a Plasterer: Plasterers will normally work 39 hours, Monday to Friday, but they can often work overtime. A solid plasterer will mainly work indoors. Conditions on building sites can be cold and draughty. Fibrous plasterers are usually based in workshops. A plastering role involves work that requires a lot of standing, bending, kneeling and climbing. Workers may have to travel from site to site, and they may also work away from home for short or long periods of time. The role requires fitness and strength, to be able to work quickly but carefully, have good hand-to-eye coordination for fibrous plastering and other decorative work. The main employers are specialist contractors and general building contractors. The number of jobs is expected to decline in the future and some are moving into the dry lining, a related trade where plasterboard is attached to walls and ceilings. The training usually involves a combination of on-the-job experience and attendance at a college or a training centre. There are apprenticeship schemes available, and it is possible to do NVQs/SVQs in plastering.
