A Financial Controller plays a crucial role in the financial management and oversight of an organisation. They are responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely preparation of financial statements, such as balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and regulations. Additionally, Financial Controllers develop and manage budgets, prepare forecasts, and analyse variances between actual and budgeted figures to aid in strategic planning and decision-making processes. Implementing and monitoring internal controls is another key responsibility, safeguarding the company's assets and ensuring the integrity of financial reporting, which includes overseeing policies and procedures to prevent fraud and errors.
Financial Controllers ensure the organisation complies with financial regulations and standards and handle tax compliance and timely filing of tax returns. They conduct financial analysis to support business decisions by analysing financial data, identifying trends, and providing insights to improve financial performance. Cash flow management is also a critical function, involving the oversight of the organisation's cash flow to ensure it meets operational needs and strategic goals.
To become a Financial Controller, you must most commonly be a certified public Accountant & also have a relevant degree within Business, Maths or related topic. You will need a lot of experience within finance, so looking at entry level roles and training on the job is also another option.
