Sommelier Jobs

Sommelier jobs work in licensed premises including restaurants, wine bars, hotels, private clubs, overseas resorts and on-board ships.
 
Sommelier jobs manages the wine service and a sommelier will have expertise in wine and other alcoholic beverages, such as cocktails, beers and spirits. 

Most restaurants and hotels have a sommelier specifically to provide a wine service and advice to guests.  Sommelier jobs will have extensive training in all aspects of wine growing, harvesting and bottling and a sommelier will have achieved qualifications from either WSET or another industry body. 

Sommelier jobs will be responsible for compiling the wine list in liaison with the restaurant management and/or head chef.  Sommelier jobs will also be on hand to guide diners in their choice of wine to accompany their food, and will often be able to advise on the other accompaniments to a meal such as classic aperitifs, cocktails, cigars, digestifs and liqueurs. 

In addition to these duties, sommelier jobs will ensure that all stock deliveries are properly documented and stored at the correct temperature to prevent the minimum wastage.  Most sommelier jobs develop strong links with such suppliers and travel abroad regularly to sample new vintages for inclusion on the ‘carte'.

A respected sommelier will often employ his own staff that he/she will train alongside the front of house brigade. 

Sommelier jobs may have to work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.  Restaurant environments can be busy and demanding and a sommelier will spend a lot of time speaking to customers, colleagues and visiting the kitchens and cellar.

  • Interested in the wines of the world

Sommelier jobs salary normally starts around £12,000.
