Desktop Publishing Jobs

Desktop publishers use computer software to format and combine text, numerical data, photographs, charts, and other visual graphic elements to produce publication-ready material. This material used by desktop publishers includes books, business cards, calendars, magazines, newsletters and newspapers, packaging, slides and tickets.

Those who want to work as desktop publishers can take classes or complete certificate programs at vocational schools, universities and colleges or on the internet.  The average non degree certification training program takes approximately one year. One may choose to obtain an associate degree in applied science or a bachelor's degree in graphic arts, graphic communications or graphic design. Some desktop publishers train on the job to develop the necessary skills.

Desktop publishers jobs involve good communication skills and basic computer skills. Desktop publishers also need a strong work ethic and the ability to compute ratios to estimate job costs. One of the main attributes of a desktop publisher is the ability to pay attention to detail and work independently, good eyesight, including visual acuity, depth perception, field of view, colour vision and the ability to focus quickly and artistic ability. 

The desktop publishers duties on a daily basis would involve writing & editing text, creating graphics to accompany text, converting photographs and drawings into digital images and being able to manipulate these images. The desktop publisher would also design page layouts and create proposals. Desktop publishers develop presentations and advertising campaigns, typeset and do colour separation and translate electronic information onto film or other traditional forms.
