Trainee Administrator Jobs

Trainee administrators work on computers to produce neat and accurate text documents. In addition to typing/word processing for reports and letters, they are responsible for a range of other tasks. These trainee administrator tasks vary depending on the level of responsibility and the type of employer, but are likely to include the office junior being responsible for stationery stocks and office equipment, welcoming visitors and arranging refreshments, answering the telephone and managing post and email, maintaining filing systems, both manual and electronic.

Trainee administrator jobs can be challenging and varied.

Most trainee administrators work standard office hours, from Monday to Friday.  Flexitime and shift work is also possible with some employers. Temporary contracts are common and often lead to permanent employment.

Trainee administrator salaries range from around £7,000 to £10,000 a year.

Trainee administrators need to be good communicators with excellent interpersonal skills, accurate in their work, with a good understanding of grammar and spelling, good at working in a team, able to meet deadlines and work under pressure, discrete when handling sensitive information, interested in business.

Most legal firms employ trainee administrator support staff, so jobs are widely available across the UK.

There are no formal entry requirements for office juniors, although some employers may expect GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3) in English and administration. Good keyboard skills are essential and additional computer knowledge, particularly of Word.

Companies generally support personal development of trainee administrators by offering a combination of in-house and external courses, and the opportunity to work closely with experienced members of staff. There is a wide range of vocational qualifications available in this area for office juniors.

There are good opportunities for trainee administrators to progress to wider administrative or secretarial roles. Senior legal positions may also be available after specialised training. In some companies, it might be possible to move into a specialist area, such as conveyancing, court work or legal cashiering.
