PA (Personal Assistant) and Executive Assistant
A PA (personal assistant) or executive assistant will work very closely with the Chief Executive, Chairman or Director of a company.
A PA’s job is to alleviate their Chief Executives workload by filtering out unnecessary and less urgent matters and many PA’s will also have their own workload and responsibilities, such as specific projects, or take over some of the Chief Executives responsibilities.
A PA may do all of the secretarial work themselves, but many supervise more junior secretaries.
A PA will have experience of diary management and organising travel and accommodation and this may include national and international visa requirements.
PA jobs may also require you to organise board meetings, invite board members to the meetings and research and prepare information relating to the agenda.
A PA or executive assistant may take minutes at board meetings, typing up the minutes and action follow ups for use at the next board meeting. A PA may be responsible for screening all telephone calls, emails and other correspondence and action where necessary on behalf of their Chief Executive or Director. PA jobs may require you to prepare and deliver PowerPoint presentations at board meetings when required.
A PA will often take on board personal projects as required, which could be anything from organising a pilot for the Chief Executives private plane to organizing major events abroad.
Tact and discretion are a very important part of a PA job as they can often be dealing with highly sensitive documents.
A PA will work office hours, 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Flexibility and longer hours could be required for some PA’s or executive assistants. PA jobs will be mainly office based, but may require you to attend meetings elsewhere.
A PA can expect a starting salary of around £17,000. Senior PA jobs can pay up to £30,000.
A PA or executive assistant should:
• have an excellent command of English and communication skills
• have good IT skills
• have excellent organisational skills
• be able to use their initiative
• work well with people at all levels.
A PA will work in all types of organisations in the public and private sectors, including industry, commerce, the media and local authorities. A PA may work in the UK or abroad.
