Trainee Administrator (Legal)
Office juniors provide office junior administrative support in a legal office environment. Office juniors work on computers to produce neat and accurate text documents. In addition to typing/word processing for reports and letters, they are responsible for a range of other tasks. These office junior tasks vary depending on the level of responsibility and the type of employer, but are likely to include the office junior being responsibility for stationery stocks and office equipment, welcoming visitors and arranging refreshments, answering the telephone and managing post and email, maintaining filing systems, both manual and electronic.
The role of an office junior can be challenging and varied.
Most office juniors work standard office hours, from Monday to Friday. Flexitime and shift work is also possible with some employers. Temporary contracts are common and often lead to permanent employment.
Office Junior salaries range from around £7,000 to £10,000 a year.
Office Juniors need to be good communicators with excellent interpersonal skills, accurate in their work, with a good understanding of grammar and spelling, good at working in a team, able to meet deadlines and work under pressure, discrete when handling sensitive information, interested in business.
Most legal firms employ office junior support staff, so jobs are widely available across the UK.
There are no formal entry requirements for office juniors, although some employers may expect GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1–3) in English and Administration. Good keyboard skills are essential and additional computer knowledge, particularly of Word.
Companies generally support personal development of office juniors by offering a combination of in-house and external courses, and the opportunity to work closely with experienced members of staff. There is a wide range of vocational qualifications available in this area for office juniors.
There are good opportunities for office juniors to progress to wider administrative or secretarial roles. Senior Legal positions may also be available after specialised training. In some companies, it might be possible to move into a specialist area, such as Conveyancing or Court Work or Legal Cashiering.
