Court Administrative Officer

Court administrative officers organise and manage the work of courts of law. Court administrative officers do not make legal decisions, but make sure the business of the court runs smoothly.

Court administrative officers work includes setting dates and times of cases and informing those who need to attend, sending out the paperwork needed for a case, following up judgements - for instance, issuing orders and collecting fines. Court administrative officers are responsible for allocating rooms and informing ushers so they can direct people to the right place, briefing legal staff on developments, answering phone queries and dealing with mail. Occasionally court administrative officers may have to deal with members of the public who are angry or upset.

Court administrative officers work between 37-40 hours a week. There is likely to be some opportunity for part-time court administrative officers to work flexible hours. Some court administrative officers work in modern buildings, where offices are light and spacious. For court administrative officers in historic buildings facilities may be more cramped. The majority of the working day is spent at a desk carrying out administrative tasks.

Salaries for court administrative officers start at around £12,000 to £17,500.

Court administrative officers need to be well organised, good communicators, patient, tactful and polite. Court administrative officers need to able to work with computers and deal with numbers, be interested in people and in court proceedings and the law.

Court administrative officers work across the UK, in towns and cities where there are courts of law.

Entry requirements for court administrative officers vary and in Scotland no specific subjects are required. An increasing number of successful applicants for court administrative officers positions have A levels/H grades or equivalent qualifications. Applications from mature entrants looking to move into court administrative officers positions are welcomed.
 
Efficient, experienced court administrative officers are likely to gain promotion to more senior administrative positions. They can also train to become legal executives
