Loss Adjuster
Loss adjusters visit clients after an insurance claim has been reported, investigating the circumstances surrounding the claim and providing independent support and guidance. The loss adjuster’s aim is to calculate the financial loss of the insured person, liaising with the insurance company.
A loss adjuster will be involved in many types of claims including fire and explosions, storm and flood damage and personal accident. Loss adjusters can work long, irregular hours and the work is mainly on clients’ sites. During large-scale emergencies they may have to spend time away from home.
Salaries start at £15,000 and can rise to £40,000 or more for successful individuals.
Insurance loss adjusters should be self motivated, have good people and communication skills, be prepared to react quickly to situations and be physically fit.
Relevant experience is important. Most entrants will have first worked in a related area such as risk management, accountancy, law, engineering or insurance. It is unusual for school leavers to directly enter loss adjusting. There are no specified entry requirements, although a BTEC diploma, HND/HNC or degree in a relevant subject can be useful.
Training is usually provided on the job, working under the supervision of a senior loss adjuster/team leader. Employers often provide structured training schemes, encouraging study for a professional qualification through the Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters or the Chartered Insurance Institute. Employers vary from specialist loss adjusting firms to insurance companies who maintain a team of loss adjusters to respond to client claims. Employment is countrywide.
With experience, loss adjusters may be able to take on increased responsibility and to deal with more complex claims. There may be opportunities to progress into management positions or to move into related areas, eg surveying, claims management or join fraud investigation teams.
