Welder
Welders join sections or plates of metal together by applying intense heat.
Welders use one or more methods of welding, which include some welders using oxyacetylene welding – hand welding using a mixture of oxygen and acetylene. Some welders deal with arc welding – hand welding using electric arc equipment and a welding rod and some welders deal with inert gas welding using nitrogen or carbon dioxide – this is very skilled work.
Welders must be able to spot errors and correct them immediately. The quality of the weld depends on the welder's skill.
Welders normally work a 37 to 39-hour basic week, which may include shifts for some welders. However, for most welders overtime is common, and most welders work much longer hours. Welders may work in factories or workshops, or in a wide range of locations on site – some welders may possibly work outdoors.
Welders start as trainee welders or welders apprentices and salaries start at around £12,000, and skilled welders, specialist welders can earn up to £40,000.
Welders should have good hand-to-eye co-ordination, good concentration, the ability to work unsupervised, the ability to work in a team.
Welders are employed in civil engineering, engineering construction, agricultural engineering, shipbuilding, vehicle manufacture and repair, andmany welders can work abroad.
The best way for welders to train is through a Foundation or Advanced Modern Apprenticeship.
