Pharmacologist

Pharmacologists study the affect drugs have on the body as well as discovering new drugs to treat disease. Pharmacologists will also carry out safety tests to discover whether a compound could have dangerous effects.

Some of the areas a pharmacologist will be involved in are testing drugs effectiveness and whether they are safe to use, seeking and securing approval for new medicines, writing papers and speaking at conferences regarding new drugs, the tests being carried out and the possible and actual results.

Working with computers and other technologically advanced equipment a pharmacologist will collect, analyse and interpret complex data requiring an analytical ability to collate information and draw appropriate conclusions.

Working often within sterile conditions pharmacologists should have practical laboratory skills, setting up and carrying out controlled experiments, have an enquiring and creative mind with good problem-solving skills, teamwork and leadership qualities are also desirable as is an interest in science and for the well-being of others.

Other skills required to carry out a pharmacologist duties include report writing, presentation skills, attention to detail and a methodical nature in order to plan, co-ordinate and supervise clinical testing. Pharmacologists should also be aware of advancements and scientific developments and how they might be applied to research.
