Medical Receptionist

A medical receptionist is responsible for being the first point of contact for patients or hospital visitors when they arrive within a healthcare centre.

A medical receptionists duties will include ensuring patients are made to feel welcome within the healthcare facility and keeping track of arranging and cancelling appointments for patients. Part of a medical receptionists’ job is also to answer the telephone within the healthcare centre, passing any relevant messages on or dealing with queries where necessary.

The responsibilities of a medical receptionist extend from filing medical records, taking requests for repeat prescriptions, assisting all visitors to the healthcare facility to keeping the reception area tidy.

There are no formal qualifications required to become a medical receptionist within a GP surgery, health centre or hospital but skills required do include first class organisational skills and the ability to work in a team environment.

Within a healthcare environment medical receptionists should also possess an interest in working with people, a calm and sympathetic manner and a general interest in health issues.

Health centres and GP surgeries use a specific healthcare computer system, normally G-PASS, to track patients’ appointments and records. Systems within hospitals and other healthcare facilities may vary however medical receptionists must understand these systems fully in order to fulfil their role.
