Operations Manager
An operations manager is responsible for the entire operation, they will focus on strategic issues while managing day-to-day operations via a team of line managers.
An operations manager will hold full responsibility for the strategic management of an operation, which may include multiple sites nationally or internationally.
Main areas of responsibility for an operations manager include managing planning activity to ensure effective use of resources and delivery of service is achieved within budget.
In addition, the operations manager is also responsible for the health & safety of the operation, maintaining a programme of subordinate development and ensuring all key performance indicators are achieved.
The operations manager provides line management to department managers such as the warehouse manager and transport manager.
An operations manager will normally work office hours Monday to Friday. There may be a requirement for overtime.
The position for an operations manager could be office based and depending on the type of operation, a certain degree of travel will be required for an operations manager.
To be an operations manager you should be able to work at both strategic and tactical levels, have good leadership skills and be able to manage, motivate and develop a team. An operations manager will be experienced in health & safety issues hold a National Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), have good communication skills and have good numeric and literacy skills.
Colleges and universities may offer foundation degree courses for an operations manager in subjects such as Logistics and Transport.
Operations Managers earn around £35,000 to £60,000 a year.
