General Manager (Hotel/Catering)

The general manager of the hotel oversees every department and is the focal point for staff, the paying guests and the business community.  Invariably most general managers have a background in the operational running of hotels and will understand how each of the big 4 departments, traditionally front of house, food and beverage, conference and banqueting and housekeeping operate successfully. The Hotel General Manager will be responsible for building a senior management team to take control of all issues on the floor.  The general manager must regularly meet with the departmental heads to ensure that each is playing their part in making the property run successfully, and in the best interests of the paying guests.  In smaller properties, the general manager will be more involved in the actual running of the business, but at the other end of the scale, the general manager becomes an ambassador for the brand and spends a significant amount of time on selling and marketing the property to national and international businesses.
