Catering Manager
A catering managers job is traditionally found in the domain of contract catering, working for outside catering firms, business or factory canteens, hospitals or schools. The catering manager needs to be both a capable chef and a talented manager, as the position of catering manager can involve input both at the stove and behind a desk. A catering manager job can include:
• hiring and training staff
• ensuring food hygiene standards are understood and maintained
• overseeing the budget and order supplies
Catering Managers often work autonomously and report in to an area or regional manager. The catering manager will be effectively responsible for ensuring the creation and delivery of the product on time and on budget, and will invariably need experience of high volume sites.
Catering managers are crucial appointments to call centres, oil rigs and warehouses and have full responsibility for providing all staff with meals whilst on site. A catering manager will staff their own team with as flexible a team of catering assistants as possible in order to prepare and serve a wide variety of foods sourced by the catering manager. Catering managers are typically chefs who have risen to the top of their profession and are now seeking fresh challenges in a more regulated work environment – the role of a catering manager allows them to utilise their cooking skills and manage a contract for an external client.
A Catering Manager needs to be
• an excellent organiser
• good at thinking quickly and sorting out problems on the spot
• a good motivator and leader
• interested in food and customer service.
Catering Managers normally work regular daytime hours, although part-time work may be possible. The salary for a catering manager may be in the region of £14,000 to £60,000 a year.
