Book-keeper
The job of a bookkeeper is to perform a variety of bookkeeping or financial recording duties.
A bookkeeper’s job will cover basic Purchase, Sales and Nominal Ledgers, bank reconciliations etc. A bookkeeper may be required to deal with payroll and year end payroll, VAT returns and credit control.
Within the job a bookkeeper may be responsible for the preparation of accounts to trial balance. A bookkeeper should be able to solve complex problems and a senior bookkeeper may develop methods or procedures to resolve recurring or unusual problems.
A bookkeeper will generally report to the Financial Controller. A bookkeeper may also report directly to a Director or Company Accountant. A bookkeeper may have to supervise the work of junior level staff
A bookkeeper can expect to earn a salary of around £15k – 25K depending on size of the organisation the bookkeeper works for.
Job Requirements
A bookkeeper should have:
• A good working knowledge of both manual and computerised accounts procedures and methods
• Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Knowledge of bookkeeping software packages such as: Sage, Oracle, Navision, Pegasus, SAP, AS400, Excel, QuickBooks, SUN, IRIS, JD Edwards
• A bookkeeper may be required to use bespoke packages
Job Locations
A Payroll clerk may work for large organisations including local authorities, retail chains, manufacturers, airlines, financial institutions and hospitals. There are also job opportunities for bookkeepers within bureaux which offer bookkeeping services to other organisations.
Job Qualifications
A bookkeeper may have HNC, HND in Accountancy or Bookkeeping qualifications.
Career/Job Prospects
An experienced bookkeeper with relevant qualifications may progress to senior bookkeeper or financial controller positions.
